Make something entirely your own.
Handbuilding is the oldest form of ceramics — and one of the most expressive. Without the constraints of the wheel, you can make almost anything: vessels, tiles, sculptural forms, functional objects or purely decorative pieces. Our adult handbuilding sessions are project-led but never prescriptive. Your tutor will guide the technique; what you make within it is up to you.
Sessions run as one-off workshops throughout the year, often themed around the season or a particular technique. All clay, tools and bisque firings are included. Glazing is booked separately at Return to Glaze — £2.50 per seat, which covers one item, with additional items at £2.50 each.

Techniques we cover.
Pinch pots
The most direct relationship between hand and clay. Pinching is the foundation of handbuilding — and a technique that rewards patience and sensitivity. Simple forms can become surprisingly refined.
Coiling
Rolling clay into coils and building them up into walls gives you enormous freedom of form. Coiling is how many of the world's most complex ceramic traditions work — and it is deeply satisfying to learn.
Slab construction
Rolling clay flat and cutting, folding and joining it opens up geometric and architectural forms that are impossible on the wheel. Tiles, boxes, trays, planters — slab work is endlessly versatile.
Sculptural modelling
Working clay three-dimensionally — building up forms, carving back into them, adding texture and surface detail. Sculpture sessions are some of our most popular and most varied.

What to expect.
Project-led sessions
Each session is built around a specific project or technique. Your tutor will demonstrate the method, then guide you through making your own version. No two sessions are the same.
All materials included
Clay, tools and bisque firings are all included in the session price. You do not need to bring anything except clothes you do not mind getting dirty.
Return to Glaze
After your session, your work is bisque fired. You then book a Return to Glaze seat to choose your glazes and apply them before the final firing. Once ready — usually 1–2 weeks — you collect your finished pieces.
About Return to GlazeNo experience needed
Handbuilding is accessible to complete beginners. Our tutors are experienced at teaching people who have never touched clay before, and the techniques are genuinely learnable in a single session.
Small groups
Handbuilding sessions are capped at 8 people — small enough that you get proper attention from your tutor throughout the session.
Wear old clothes
Clay gets everywhere. We have aprons, but clay has a way of finding gaps. Wear something you do not mind getting dirty.
